Suresh Grover Gives Evidence at the Undercover Policing Inquiry

The Monitoring Group’s National Coordinator and founder Suresh Grover has given evidence at the UK Undercover Policing Inquiry regarding the long-running surveillance of the Southall Monitoring Group and later The Monitoring Group.

He described his early experiences of racist violence in the 1970s, the formation of the Southall Monitoring Group in the early 1980s, and his long-term work supporting families affected by racist attacks and police misconduct. His evidence included his involvement in the Stephen Lawrence family campaign and the structure of the wider supporters’ group during the Lawrence Inquiry.

Suresh challenged the accuracy of several undercover reports concerning him and his organisation, describing them as confused or incorrect. He also spoke about the wider impact of covert policing on his work, including surveillance, misreporting, concerns raised with funders, and the effect on trust and safety.

His evidence forms part of the Inquiry’s examination of the Special Demonstration Squad between 1993 and 2007, including allegations of political surveillance, racism, and wider misconduct.
