Southall is one of the key landmarks of anti-racist protests that has shaped modern Britain. It is the birthplace of pioneering anti-racist workers struggles, youth movements, self-organised women’s groups and civil rights campaigns as well as a rich mix of cultural heritage, including bhangra, soca and reggae musicians and South Asian cuisine.

The History Walk charts a memorable journey through the main artery of the town, stopping at key landscapes and recreating iconic moments. You will hear about English, Welsh and early migrants, the Dominion Cinema and the Indian Workers Associations, largest Sikh temple in Europe, the Manor House, built in the mid 16th century, the Tudor Rose nightclub venue and its pioneering role in establishing soca music in the UK, a seminal building shaped by a Chinese architecture and Southall Town Hall and its relationship with civil rights history.

Why did early migrants settle in Southall and how did they build their communities? What were the challenges they faced and how did they build resistance against institutional racism and the far-right? What role did culture play? How does its history affect the present political and social landscape?

Anti racism and the far-right:

We encourage participants to watch Channel 4’s award winning documentary Defiance: Fighting the Far Right prior to coming on the tour. It’s three-part documentary but please do watch part 1 as it offers a wider context https://www.channel4.com/programmes/defiance-fighting-the-far-right
