“Police wouldn’t talk to us, older generations wouldn’t hear us. The street was for me the only place where we could make a statement”

 Suresh Grover

Defiance: Fighting the Far Right is a powerful UK Channel 4 documentary series, which premiered on May 8, 2024 and over three consecutive nights examined the resilience of Britain's Asian community as they confronted a campaign of violence and murder perpetrated by the far-right. Events covered between 1976 and 1981 include the Southall protests, the tragic death of school teacher and anti-racism activist Blair Peach, the Battle for Brick Lane, and the remarkable story of the Bradford 12.

National Coordinator at The Monitoring Group and life-long anti-racism campaigner, Suresh Grover is one of the documentary’s key contributors who movingly reflects on this shocking period in history.

Suresh commented: "This is our history. We want everyone who needs to see it to see it, and to be part of the conversation, We hope it sparks”.

British Asians decided they would no longer put up with the racist violence, as mainly young men and women formed youth groups and took to the streets to protest against the hatred.

Featuring interviews with many of the activists of the time, the film elegantly cuts between footage of them during the era and as present-day talking heads reflecting back on their defiance.

Defiance: Fighting the Far Right was produced by Rogan Productions, Left Handed Films and GroupM Motion Entertainment.
